The Advance Arthroplasty Course was conducted at T. N. Medical College and B. Y. L. Nair Hospital, Mumbai on October 13, 14 & 15, 2017. Total of 15 delegates participated in this academic event coming from all over the country.
The three day course had the Hip module on Day 1, Knee module on Day 2 and Cadaveric Sessions for both hip and knee on Day 3. Live surgeries were performed on both days covering all aspects of Complex and Basic Hip replacements. Removal of implants and Hip Arthroplasty, Uncemented Hip in young, Cemented Hip in old, apart from standard knee arthroplasty, Knee with severe Varus deformity and use of extended rods and building of bone block was shown. Surgeons, Dr. Pradeep Bhonsale, Dr. Mohan Desai, Dr. Naushad Hussain and Dr. Atul Panghate, performing these surgeries had a live one-one interaction with the delegates at each step of surgery by way of audiovisual communications.
Eminent faculty in the field of Arthroplasty covered the topics in all aspects of knee and hip replacements. Recent Advances in management with use of Navigation and Robotic surgeries were covered to greater depth. Special talk on use of megaprosthesis was included.
The Lectures were followed by very interactive discussion session where the delegates queries regarding the different techniques, use of newer implants, use of antibiotics, thrombo-prophylaxis and post-op mobilisation were answered to their satisfaction. Case scenarios evolved enriching discussion from all faculty. The evening sessions on Day 1 and Day 2 had the Hands-on Saw Bone workshop where the delegates could practice the hip and knee arthroplasty using the imported instrumentation set, with faculty to supervise. Day 3, the cadaveric lab hands-on session was the much appreciated and highlight of the course, where the delegates practiced, what they learned over last two days on the fresh frozen cadavers, using imported instrumentation with a very effective one-to-one delegate faculty ratio. Each of the delegates and faculty were given a complete safety protection kit from head to toe. The faculty supervised and gave their expert tips and guidance at each and every step. All the delegates appreciated the course, course content and the busy packed academic schedule.
The course was granted 4 MMC accreditation credit hour points.
