DaySchool on musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders

The 7th edition of DaySchool on musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders was attended by 48 participants; 5 could not attend due to various reasons. The course that was planned for Orthopaedicians and Radiologists involved in the diagnosis of musculoskeletal (MSK) disorders was inaugurated as per schedule by President-Elect of Bombay Orthopaedic Society, Dr C J Thakkar.In his brief speech he welcomed the ongoing effort to bring together the two specialities and hoped that more than our participants, the patient population will benefit. It provided a balanced overview of traditional to newest state of art MSK imaging modalities and techniques.

Dr Nimish Nanavati (Inflammatory arthritis: investigations & diagnosis) gave details of clinical diagnosis, laboratory investigations and imaging of rheumatoid arthritis.

Imaging of Sacro-iliac arthritis and associated minutaes were presented in detail by Dr Malini Lawande.

There after Dr Bipin Shah discussed the use of USG in tracking the effectivity of the treatment is discussed.

After a refreshing tea-break Dr Sanjay Garude presented clinical aspects of various sports injuries involving shoulder joint.

Dr Darshna Sanghvi showed how these injuries be recognized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). She also showed other injuries that could be recognized by MRI.

Dr Ashwin Lawande then described usefulness of USG in location lesions of the rotator cuff and other structures around the shoulder and other areas of the upper limg.

There after the sport injuries of the lower limb were discussed: Dr Abhay Narvekar described the clinical and diagnostic aspects, Dr Darshana dealt with Imaging by MR and Dr Ashwin Lawande discussed use and effectivity of USG.

After a working lunch break Dr Vishal Peshettiwar showed various clinical conditions involving spine in different regions, their MRI; he went to show how these conditions were seen and managed during the surgical procedures.

Imaging in paediatric skeletal injuries poses a problem for both the specialties; a ‘duet’ presentation by Dr Taral Nagda (orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr Bhavin Jankaria (Imaging consultant) was the toast of the meeting. They elaborated the clinical nuances and imaging fineries of elbow injury. It was an exemplary presentation for joint presentation.

Foot and ankle injuries form a formidable quantum of patients attending emergency rooms. Dr Anand J Thakur (Plain x-ray & uncommon fractures of foot and ankle) enumerated various essential radiological views, their interpretations and demonstrated those rare injuries that are often overlooked. an USG expert, Dr Ashwin Lawande (Tendon and Ligament injuries in foot Ashwin) showed how to bring out various injuries and pathologies for our patients’ benefit.

Athletic pubalgia-clinical imaging and surgical perspective and controversies Lastly, with increasing number of professional athletes, weekend warriors in sports and uniformed services, pubalgia or athletic hernia as it was erroneously called, is an often encountered clinical entity which causes unexplained pain in the symphysis pubis area; Dr Amogh Rege lead a cognizant description and discussion of this condition and its imaging.

Dr Neeraj Bijlani managed the audio-visual side of the meeting. The projection was flawless and without a hitch. He also supervised the recording of the entire proceeding for placement on the web. The audience had ample opportunity to ask question and interact with presenters and were able to clear all their doubts and queries.

The venue, 3rd floor hall at Global Hospital, Parel is one of the nicest place for medical meeting. The acoustics is excellent and support staff is epitome of perfection.
